Hama: It is the ancient Hamat which was inhabited since the fourth millennium BC then it yielded to the Akkads, the Somers until the end of the twenty second century BC when it was attacked by the Amoites who destroyed it then made it a center for them... Afterwards Hama witnessed the Babylonian, the Hittite, the Persian, the Greek, the Hellenistic and the Seleucid eras. Then it was occupied by the Romans, the Byzantines and in the year 638 AD the Moslem Arabs opened it. It witnessed the various developments and events that took place during the different periods of their rule. Then it became the capital of the Ayyoubi's Emirate with the very famous ruler the scientist King Abil-Fida whor wrote very well-known book of geography and history... |

The Water Wheels: |
Hama the city of Hama on the river Orontes has put the river to good use, to provide an original method of irrigation. Arab engineers built enormous wooden water wheels, driven by the current and fitted with scoops. These fed aqueducts more than ten meters high, which then took water out into the countryside. This technique was in use before the thirteenth century. |
